It was not until 1830 (52 years after Toplady's death) that the tune for this poem was composed. He named his tune "Toplady" in honor of the writer of the original poem. It is certainly one of the best-known in the English language. In my opinion, Thomas Hasting’s original “Toplady” tune and Richard Redhead’s Petra variation both sound a bit too bright and chirpy, compared with the helplessness and pathos that Augustus Toplady’s words evoke.
